Laser hair removal and pulsed light hair removal is a
definitive method of hair removal. Laser or light based methods are sometimes
called photo-hair removal. Some machines use a xenon lamp called flash lamp
that emits a spectrum of intense light (intense pulsed light or IPL).
Flash laser treatments are sometimes commonly referred to as
laser hair removal but are not actually so. The basic principle of laser hair
removal is "selective thermolysis". The laser causes localized damage
by burning the black hair-emitting areas without burning the rest of the skin

areas called chromophores.
Laser hair removal primarily targets melanin. There are two types of melanin: melanin (which gives the skin and black hair) and pheomelanin (which gives red hair, Asian skin colors and freckles). The less the hairs contain melanin, the less efficient the laser. It is for this reason that people with gray, red or blond hair are not good indications for laser hair removal. On the other hand, the more melanin the skin contains, the less the laser can tell the difference between the skin and the hair.
